iPod Classic discontinued, 160 GB model at high prices on eBay

Weeks ago Apple announced the iPod Classic was discontinued from being manufactured and sold. The largest of these is a 160 gigabyte model that can hold as many as 40,000 digital songs, which is a hefty music collection for anyone. As many loyal fans of Apple products know, that makes these a pretty sought-after collector’s item now. For those who didn’t know, some of the discontinued MP3 players are fetching incredibly high prices on sites such as eBay or Amazon.

iPod Classic 160GB discontinuedIt’s been reported by PC Mag that models of the device are being sold for as much as $1,000 brand new. It’s also noted that the used versions can be found for about $250 on Amazon.com website. If you’ve got one in the box, you may want to consider listing it on eBay if you’re in the need for some extra spending money.

The iPod first arrived in October 2001. The Classic had been selling as part of the iPod lineup for 13 years before the announcement came this past fall that it would no longer be offered. The original Classic had just 5GB of storage on it, so it’s come a long way with the 160 GB models available now.

Apple has not announced plans to do away with any of their other current iPod offerings. They include the iPod Nano, Shuffle and Touch. In all reality, it seems that most digital music could be going the way of the cloud, and of popular online services such as Pandora, Spotify and SIRIUS radio. That would meet less on-board storage to deal with and more convenience of storing a music collection online. Hence, the 160 gigabytes is less of a necessity – for some.

So for the Classic, consider it more of a nostalgic item for Apple loyalists and music lovers. Yes, this is the hot item for Christmas time. Will you be a buyer or seller?
